On a freezing cold day, more than 30 residents of the Rodeway Inn in Brevard discovered their homes been sold without any warning or notice, their water had been shut off and their electric utilities were going to end in just a few days.

These low-income residents had month-to-month leases with the Inn; most had already paid rent for the month; some even longer. Most didn’t have the resources, or even cars, to move elsewhere, and yet they couldn’t stay without heat or water.

PLS Staff Attorney Tom Gallagher and volunteer attorney Ray Reiser met with worried residents that very day. Soon after, PLS filed a temporary injunction in court to keep the utilities on.

Ultimately, PLS was able to keep utilities on for all residents for more than 30 days, giving them weeks instead of days to find new places in which to live.

Local groups including United Way, the Haven and the Dept of Social Services got involved. As a result of the work by PLS and the extraordinary efforts of these organizations, each resident was relocated to alternative housing.
